Celebrate the annual winter migration of Kachemak Bay State Park’s majestic bald eagles. Every winter thousands of bald eagles migrate to the Cook Inlet and the Homer Spit. Homer is the best place in the world to view and photograph eagles as they winter along our coastal beaches in search of food and shelter from the deep snow of the state park.
Our bald eagle is one of the world’s largest birds of prey. Adult females stand as tall as 30 to 40 inches long, weighing up to 15 lbs with huge wings spans up to 8 feet and flight speeds up to 150 – 200 miles an hour in steep dives. Their powerful talons are an inch long and apply a 1000 pounds of pressure per square inch. The Endangered Species Act of 1973 stabilized our thriving bald eagle population of well over 50,000 Alaskan birds. Homer has the 2nd largest population of eagles in the world and 80% of all published bald eagle images are from the Homer Spit with the dramatic glacier capped Kachemak Bay State Park as the backdrop.
The “Eagle Lady” Jean Keene has been feeding and caring for Homer’s nesting winter eagle population since 1979. Christmas to the end of April hundreds of bald eagles live on the Homer spit, Keene feeds 500 lbs of fish daily, between 8:30am-10:30am seven days a week. Bald Eagles will eat 1– 2 pounds of fish per day. Photographers from all over the world come here for this unique up close opportunity to view the birds.
Join us for one of nature’s annual winter spectacles, the Eagles of Homer.
